I Thought Webroot SpySweeper Would be Out of Business by Now
I remember when Webroot SpySweeper came on the scene. It was great. It detected AND removed viruses for FREE. It was so good it became a viable commercial product, that could be purchased at retail stores.
Webroot seemed to had lost it’s identity while transitioning from a free product to a commercial one.
They offered a free spyware scanner tool that could convert to a removal tool if you paid. This was a good way to make a profit and fund their spyware killing research. However, the free scanner nags you about buying the product, every time you startup the computer. It constantly displays spyware alerts, but will not do anything about it.
Plus more and more of my customers who had SpySweeper were getting infected by spyware after the purchase, even though SpySweeper is supposed to be a real time active scanner.
Finally I had enough. I tried all types of removal tools, but could hardly find a reliable spyware removal tool to recommend to clients. I eventually stumbled upon Malwarebytes, and this is very close to the only tool I need in my battles against spyware. It scans and removes with ease. The real time scanner works like a charm, and I didn’t pay an arm and a leg for it.
I believe pairing Malwarebytes with AVG Anti-Virus is probably all of the defense you will ever need, and together they wouldn’t use half of the resources as Norton, McAfee, or Webroot alone.
Whenever I get a spyware call, I remove Webroot to free up computer resources, stop the nags, and make room for a better solution. I then install Malwarebytes and get busy removing spyware, Trojans, and root kits.
It is super easy to use, because all you do is click “Scan,” then you click “Remove,” and finally you click “Finish.” It is very thorough, so it can detect nearly all current spyware, and it updates religiously.
